Scottsdale, ARIZONA—ReasonToRock.com has been selected as a winner of the prestigious “Historic and Cultural Heritage” award from www.perm.ru. A bronze award was given based on Reason to Rock’s “excellent content” and for “enriching the Internet community.” The award listing can be viewed at http://heritage.perm.ru/awards/winners/music01.htm.
Reason to Rock is a new book about the aesthetics of Rock music that is being published via the World Wide Web. The goal of this book is to seriously evaluate rock music as an art form. It does so by first looking at the essential elements of rock — specific attributes that distinguish great Rock music from both other musical forms and from lesser examples of Rock.
The book then reviews these elements in action, through a detailed discussion of specific recordings. Some of these are well known, such as The Rolling Stones’ song, “Sympathy for the Devil.” Others are more obscure, such as Jesse Winchester’s recording, “Quiet About It.” All of the tracks are quite different in many ways, yet they consistently exhibit the essential elements.
Author Herb Bowie graduated from the University of Michigan in 1973 with a B.A. in English. Herb wrote Rock music reviews for the Michigan Daily while in Ann Arbor. He has written another book, Why Die? A Beginner’s Guide to Living Forever.
